Dalrymple begins with a pilgrimage to find the source of the River Ganges - venerated as being a sacred river and the fount of Hindu worship. This journey takes him up into the slopes of the Himalayas, known to Hindus as "Shiva's matted locks".

In 1653 Oliver Cromwell sent a fleet of ships to attack the royalist stronghold at Duart Castle in Scotland. Dr Colin Martin - a lecturer in maritime history at St Andrew's University- has spent the last seven years diving a wreck in the Sound of Mull to gather evidence that it is The Swan, one of the ships from Cromwell's mission. But his quest is under threat from the increasing number of ships churning up the waters.
