Day-two coverage continues from the Royal Birkdale Club in Southport. The event has been dominated by players from the United States for the past three years with victories by John Daly in 1995, Tom Lehman in 1996 and Justin Leonard last year. In fact, over the past decade, the sole European player to have held aloft the famous claret jug has been Britain's Nick Faldo , who triumphed in 1990 at St Andrews and 1992 at Muirfield, although Colin Montgomerie and Lee Westwood wi bolster domestic hopes. All the competitors will be mindful of the looming halfway cut, which will eliminate all but the top 75 players for the remaining two rounds.

Introduced by Steve Rider, with commentary by Peter Alliss, Alex Hay, Mike Hughesdon, Beverly Lewis, Gary Wolstenholme and Dougie Donnelly.

James Naughtie introduces live coverage from London's Royal Albert Hall - in simultaneous broadcast with Radio 3 - of Berlioz's Damnation of Faust, the opening concert of this year's BBC Proms season.

The Damnation of Faust, with a dramatic score recounting the story of a man who uses his soul to strike a deal with the Devil, reflects one of the 1998 Proms season's major themes - the connection between magic, mystery and music.

Baritone Bryn Terfel takes the role of Mephistopheles while tenor Richard Margison and mezzo-soprano Ann Murray play, respectively, Faust and his lover, Marguerite, with baritone Donald Maxwell as Brander.

Andrew Davis conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, BBC Singers, and New London Children's Choir.

During the interval, from 8.35-8.55pm, Naughtie investigates the concept of Hell and its historical grip on the imaginations of poets, musicians and painters.
