Next month marks the 100th anniversary of the first fatality on the roads, since when 20 million other such deaths have been recorded. Technological advances have significantly reduced the possibility of collisions, but the price of increased safety has often been paid in gruesome research.
Archive footage, often graphic in nature, illustrates how far experiments went in an attempt to lessen the potential for injury. A new series begins in February.
