Today's Choices: Tsar Boris: the Yeltsin Years 7.00pm BBC2
The first programme in BBC correspondent Bridget Kendall's two-part report on the high politics and low plotting of Boris Yeltsin's Russia is a vivid and detailed account aptly called Seizing the Throne.
The story begins in 1991 when Yeltsin emerged as top man after helping to defeat a coup launched by Gorbachev's own ministers. What follows is the story of how he tightened his grip on power and survived the threat of civil war. Alongside numerous Russian politicians, contributors include ex-US president George Bush and his secretary of state James Baker and, providing a peep into the inner circle, Boris Yeltsin's bodyguard.

Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin 's favourite film, which he viewed over 100 times, was the musical comedy Volga Volga, which told the story of a group of farm workers determined to prove themselves. His devotion is at least partly explained by the film's use of his favourite slogan - "Life is better, life is happier".
Dana Ranga 's film recalls the often strange and forgotten attempts by Soviet film-makers to match Hollywood's popular appeal by entertaining the socialist masses with pieces that choreographed workers' unstinting physical labours. Series editor Nicholas Fraser
