For 150 years, the loss of Hong Kong to Britain was deeply felt by successive Chinese leaders. As China prepares to regain the territory on 1 July, when the colony is officially handed back, British officials reveal for the first time their misgivings about the deal which was struck in secret talks in the early eighties.
Presenter Julian Halloran charts Britain's retreat from Hong Kong, from the first secret moves to the surrender of sovereignty, while both moderate and outspoken Hong Kong politicians reveal the depth of hostility they still feel for those British politicians who blocked their escape route to Britain.
The Last Governor, a five-part series charting the events leading up to the end of British rule in Hong Kong, begins on BBC1 later this month.
