Recorded at the Sydney Opera House, he has set this tragic love story in the decadent Paris of the 1950s, with a young cast who help capture the intensity of the tale.

Dumped by his mother at an institution where boys are rigorously trained to perform in the opera, Douzi finds protection with the tougher Shitou.
Pushed into female roles because of his slight build, Douzi becomes confused about his sexual identity. As the years pass, the two become stars of the Peking Opera, but they live in turbulent times and sexual and emotional betrayal tear them apart.
