Comedy, the first in a week-long celebration of classic films starring Charlie Chaplin

In snowbound Sierra Nevada, a lone prospector is driven to seek shelter in a log cabin. Also sheltering are Black Larson and Big Jim McKay. Hunger leads to rows and some inventive food preparations. In this specially prepared sound version, released in 1942, Chaplin himself narrates and a musical score is added.

A performance by Birmingham Royal Ballet of Sir Peter Wright 's new production of this popular ballet, with its memorable score by Leo Delibes. The production was recorded in May this year at London's Royal Opera House in Covent Garden to mark the 125th anniversary of the first performance in Paris.

The ballet tells the tale of Swanilda and Franz, bickering young lovers fascinated by the beautiful stranger who sits reading on the balcony of Dr Coppelius's house. Discovering who she is leads the lovers and their friends into trouble as they break into the workshop of Dr Coppelius.
