Veteran documentary film-maker Chris Marker was on hand to observe
Akira Kurosawa at work when the Japanese director made his epic Ran. This programme was the result, and it shows Kurosawa, "the master", grappling with the logistics of filming spectacular battle scenes on Mount Fuji and observes the highly skilled production team and cast at work.
Marker gives an insight into the lives of the extras as well as the stars and reveals the complex preparations for sequences that often ended up on the cutting room floor. Ran is being shown on Friday night on BBC2.
