The second of a three-part journey to the birthplace of humanity and a natural wonder of the world - the Great Rift Valley of Africa.

The Serengeti plains, unsurpassed in their grandeur and beauty, were formed from clouds of ash drifting over the Rift Valley. Herds of gazelle, zebra and wildebeest run the gauntlet of wild dogs, cheetahs and lions, creating the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth. Here, too, the Masai people come to graze their cattle.
Rain, which brings life to the plains, collects in the Rift Valley to form lakes. Some are shallow, others so deep they become oceans in miniature with unique coral reef-like communities. A few lakes have been enriched with volcanic minerals to form crusts of burning soda and a home for flamingoes, which thrive in their millions in this most inhospitable landscape.

A five-part series which tells the story of shopping from both sides of the counter.

From the Bon Marchein Paris to New York's Macy's, this programme looks at the heyday of the department store and at how it aimed to entice female shoppers.
Fantastic window displays offered cheap entertainment and, at the turn of the century, the department store became one of the few places where women could socialise in public without being accompanied by men. But there was a downside to this new-found independence. Female shop assistants often had to abide by a strict code of discipline in order to present an image of respectability to the customer.
