Third of a four-part series, narrated by Robert Lindsay , which marks 50 years of the Welfare State by tracing its often troubled evolution since the Second World War.
In 1945 the jewel in the Welfare State's crown was the National Health Service. The government pledged to ensure that no one would lie sick or die merely because of poverty. As the medical community began more and more to embrace the idea, the NHS became the envy of the world. But, instead of demand tailing off as the general health of the nation improved, it steadily increased over the succeeding half century with each pharmaceutical breakthrough, and the Utopian vision was blighted by escalating costs, rising expectations and the needs of an aging population. Funding the service became a political issue and the patients were those most immediately affected. The realisation was starting to dawn that the NHS could not carry the weight of the nation's ills alone. Producer Denman Rooke ; Series producer

Veterans, including two members of the French Resistance, join historians to discuss the veracity of Abrahams's controversial standpoint. See today's choices.
