In the fourth of six programmes, travelling chef Gary Rhodes arrives in Herefordshire at harvest festival time. His first port of call is Monkland Parish Church, where the local ladies are busy preparing for the festival. Apples are in plentiful supply in Herefordshire and Gary's first recipe is for honey-roast apples with toffee cream. Later, he joins local gamekeeper George White in an attempt to catch an eel. After spending half the night hunting without success, he buys some smoked eel at the local fishmongers to create a salad with potato, beetroot and caramelised onion. Anne Sandford, curator of the Hereford Museum, reveals how to ensure a good harvest for the following year by carrying out an ancient fertility rite. Gary's final visit is to a forest, which former SAS man Lofty Wiseman uses as his kitchen, where he takes a lesson in survival and enjoys a meal prepared in an open air cooking pit.
BBC Book: More Rhodes around Britain, featuring recipes from the series, is available priced £5.99 from booksellers.
