Germany v South Korea Bolivia v Spain
Will Germany go through from tonight's match against South
Korea, in the Cotton Bowl,
Dallas, as winners of group C? Or will it be Spain, who take on Bolivia at Soldier Field, Chicago? Or could there be a major upset?
There is live coverage from
, one of the games and reports and highlights of the other as the first stage of the tournament reaches its climax. The prize for the group winners is to play their next game in Chicago, while the runners-up will have potentially more difficult match in Washington.
The Germans have an immensely experienced squad. Twelve of their 22-man party were with them in Italy four years ago when, as West Germany, they won the world championship for the third time.
The South Koreans are one of the big outsiders of the championship but at least they will have strong "local" support in Dallas where there is a large population of South Koreans. They will also want some good performances in this, their fourth appearance in the finals, to bolster ambitions to stage the finals in eight years' time.
Many pundits felt that if the expected domination of the championships by Brazil,
Argentina, Germany and Italy was to be challenged then Spain had the armoury. Certainly they concluded their qualifying group ona high, winning their last five matches and trouncing the Republic of Ireland in Dublin.
Perhaps the best Bolivia can hope for is to pick up one of the four places in the second round that have been left open for the best third-placed teams in the opening group matches.
Despite a victory over Brazil in their South American group, the Bolivians do not look to have the strength or experience to test the leading teams in the tournament. However, they looked a side keen to play attractive football when they lost 1-0 to the Republic of Ireland in a friendly last month.
