A new run of the arts and culture series includes programmes about science fiction author Philip K Dick, bare knuckle boxing, film-maker Derek Jarman, the Bahai religion, ragga music and American artist Cindy Sherman.
But the season opens with In Search of Oz, an exploration of the phenomenal popularity of L Frank Baum 's famous children's story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, written in 1900. About 20 film versions of the story have been made (including a 1925 one with Oliver Hardy), and the programme includes clips from a selection of these, plus the first TV showing of Baum's own 1908 film and missing footage from the Judy Garland movie (being shown tomorrow at 2.50pm).
Distinguished devotees to Baum's magical land include writers Gore Vidal, Ray Bradbury and Saiman Rushdie, and film-maker Nora Ephron.
