Natural Selection. As the cost-cutting continues, it's the turn of the animals, and 1,300 of them - one third of the whole collection - will have to go. The birds are the first to be moved out. Elsewhere the curator is faced with impossible choices: chimps or orang-utans - only one group can be kept. No move is easy, for either animals or keepers: when Tai, one of the four elephants, has to be forcibly removed to Chester, it is a distressing operation for the devoted head keeper. And the Fellowship of the Zoological Society is enraged at the disposal of its collection. Director Molly Dineen
