The return of the fortnightly series of historical documentaries.
Beside Franco in Spain. This is the story of how Britain abandoned Spain's democratically elected government during the Spanish Civil War of 1936 and gave clandestine support to the nationalists and General
Franco. Traditionally, Hitler and Mussolini have been seen as the villains who helped mastermind the fascist overthrow of Spain's fledgling democracy, while Britain seemed to have played no part. Tonight's programme presents remarkable new evidence, discovered in Spanish archives, that Britain used all its economic and diplomatic cunning to safeguard its political and commercial interests in Spain by ensuring victory for
General Franco's forces.
As Sainz Rodriguez , a Francoist minister from 1938 to 1941, says: 'Many
Spaniards believe that we gained our victory exclusively through Italian and German aid. But though they did contribute, the fundamental reason for our winning the war was the English.'
