The Birdman of St James 's Arthur May was parent to thousands of ducklings. In 21 years as birdkeeper on Duck Island, opposite Buckingham Palace, he cared for the residents of St James's Park and any birds of passage in temporary difficulties. The highlight of his year was watching spring ducklings hatch; the saddest moment in autumn when they left him to go out on the lake. The continuing company of Daphne, the one-winged pelican, provided consolation. Never in his life had Arthur May had duck for dinner.
