The Birdman of St James 's Arthur May was parent to thousands of ducklings. In 21 years as birdkeeper on Duck Island, opposite Buckingham Palace, he cared for the residents of St James's Park and any birds of passage in temporary difficulties. The highlight of his year was watching spring ducklings hatch; the saddest moment in autumn when they left him to go out on the lake. The continuing company of Daphne, the one-winged pelican, provided consolation. Never in his life had Arthur May had duck for dinner.

To Give Up a Child
Nobody gives up a child lightly, but in this country there are hundreds of thousands of mothers who have had their children adopted. People who haven't had to make this choice rarely understand the anguish that can result.
'I had a son adopted 23 years ago, I cried for weeks and weeks and not a day goes by without me thinking of him - even now.'
'At one stage I had to make myself believe he had died, there was no other way I could cope.'
Mary Wooliscroft , founder of the Natural Parents'
Support Group attempts to reach out the hand of friendship and understanding to mothers who chose to give up a child.

Winner of the Royal Society Award for best science, medical or technology programme of 1987.
Pierre Garand and Gilles Thibault lie critically ill in Montreal's Royal Victoria Hospital. Their only hope of survival is a heart transplant. "Horizon" follows every stage of the fight to save each life: the doctors' discussions to decide whether the patient is too ill to have a transplant; the anxiety of the family as they wait; the frantic search for a donor and the surgeons' race across the border to the USA to get a heart. Finally, hours later, will the transplanted heart beat in its new body?
This programme shows in raw, emotional detail what it means to be in desperate need of another's heart, and what it's like to receive one.
