Since that day two British Open wins, two US Masters and many wins all over the world have brought Ballesteros a long way from caddying at 25 pence a round in Spain to having his name engraved on winners' trophies.
He talks to Gordon Hewitt about the big game pressures, his need to relax and see his family in Spain.
