A Portrait of the Maestro by Christopher Nupen Andres Segovia , the Andalucian par excellence and one of the greatest performing musicians of the century, died in Madrid on 2 June at the age of 94. This film pays tribute to a career that spanned more than 70 years and made
Segovia's name synonymous with the Spanish guitar in almost every part of the world.
His achievement is unique in the history of Western music; Segovia did for the guitar what Casals did for the cello, but he did it with an instrument that had not previously been accepted on the international concert platform.
In the summer of 1967 Andres Segovia returned to
Andalucia at the age of 75 and took his first full summer holiday in 35 years. In the relaxed atmosphere of what was then his new home, Los Olivos, Segovia recalls the ideals, problems and rewards of a lifetime devoted to the Spanish guitar and plays music that is closely associated with his extraordinary career.
