Last Link in the Chain?
On 3 January 1986 nine men began a historic march of 450 miles from the Gartcosh steel mill near Glasgow to the door of No 10. They embodied the spirit of the campaign which has united Scotland against British Steel's decision to close Gartcosh on 31 March. This film follows the marchers across the border and through the old steel towns of Consett and Corby as they carry their message south: that shutting down
Gartcosh not only means the unnecessary sacrifice of 700 jobs but threatens the future of the huge Ravenscraig steel complex nearby. And closing 'the Craig' would be seen in Scotland as an industrial Culloden.

The man-like creatures who roamed Britain and Europe 100,000 years ago are not the ancestors of present-day Europeans - who came from somewhere else entirely. So far away, in fact, that the average white Briton is closer genetically to the average black African than to a pre-Stone Age Briton.
For a long time scientists have been digging into the ground hoping to find fossils and so trace human ancestry back millions of years. But it now seems that they ought to dig into the human body, because all individuals carry around a library of information in their cells, and recent advances in medical science make it possible to decode this, with startling results. "Horizon" looks at some of the latest discoveries about just where modern man came from, and when.

From the record books alone Ron Clarke would have to be judged the best distance runner of all time. In the 1960s he set over 20 world best times for races between two miles and 30,000 metres. In 1965 he held seven world records simultaneously: three miles; 5,000 metres; six miles; 10,000 metres; ten miles; 20,000 metres and the one hour run. To some critics Clarke's inability to win either Olympic or Commonwealth Games honours marred what was otherwise a glittering career. Today this chartered accountant from Melbourne has channelled his talents into managing fitness centres. Barry Davies talks to Clarke in one of the leisure centres he is developing, on the outskirts of Bath.
