Famine in parts of Africa is becoming endemic. Soil erosion and spreading areas of desert are reducing the amount of land available for cultivation, while at the same time the population is rising. The situation is not helped by the overgrazing of animals, or by widespread deforestation, which contributes to the frequency of the droughts. But the cutting down of forests still ravages other parts of the world.
