Aircraft factories are full of enthusiasts, like
Paul Murphy , a supervisor at British Aerospace, Manchester:
'People who work in the aircraft industry consider themselves an elite. There're some magnificent tradesmen. There's also a real mystique about aircraft.'
With archive film dating back to the First World War, aircraft workers tell a technical success story. They pioneered the pure jet, the turbo prop, the jet airliner, the supersonic airliner, and the jump jet.
But the cost of developing new planes was rising all the time.
