Ian la Frenais, film and television writer and producer, discusses his choice of heroes with Eric Robson. The seeds of Porridge, The Likely Lads and Auf Wiedersehen, Pet can be found in Ian's earliest idols, Just William and Billy Liar, while musical influences include The Rolling Stones and Bob Marley and the Wailers.
Commuting between England and the US, he can appreciate the skills of Joe Namath, the American footballer, as well as those of Len Shackleton, but still he goes home to Tyneside, which has provided so much of the comedy he has developed over the years with his partner Dick Clement.
