Ealing Studios' classic war film is a tribute to the Merchant Navy, based on the heroic recovery of MV San Demetrio by her crew in 1940. Carrying 12,000 tons of petrol and 900 miles from Britain, the ship was shelled by a German battleship and caught fire. What happened next was described by an official of the shipping company as 'an epic which will go down in history wherever tales of the sea are told'.
