Occitan, rather than French, is the original language of much of southern France. In the Languedoc region it is enjoying something of a revival, and is being seen as the focal point of a new mood of self-determination among the Occitan people, who have a historic resistance to central government.

Fifty years ago the BBC Northern Orchestra was created to provide broadcast music for the north of England.
Two years ago, in recognition of its increased stature, it was renamed the BBC
Philharmonic Orchestra.
Tonight, as part of its half century celebrations, a recording of the world premiere performance of Peter Maxwell Davies 's Third Symphony.
Peter Maxwell Davies was bom and studied in Manchester and it is appropriate that this first performance takes place in the Free Trade Hall,
Manchester. He talks to
Michael Berkeley about the influences behind the creation of his new symphony.
The programme also includes a performance of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in which the soloist is Silvia Marcovici

Having won the Grand Slam last year, Scotland have already lost their opening two matches and Wales, after two postponements, will be looking for a first win in their bid for the championship. Both Ireland and France are committed to open rugby and an exciting game is ensured as both sides have their eyes too on the Championship.
