The most widely performed of all British composers - albeit a naturalised
Briton-was born 300 years ago today in the small German town of Halle.
Tonight's concert, broadcast live from Westminster Abbey, includes music from all periods of Handel's life.
Popular music, including the 'Hallelujah' chorus from
'Messiah', 'Zadok the Priest' and 'Let the bright seraphim', is interspersed with some less well-known works, including concertos for oboe, for organ and for a double-orchestra. Arias and choruses from oratorios and operas are performed by Pauline Tinsley James Bowman

This film was first shown in the Yesterday's Witness series in 1974. James Cameron is the narrator. 'In this tranquil corner of Norfolk in the spring of 1914, the local schoolchildren took drastic action and a spontaneous act of love; they came out on strike because their teachers had been sacked.
