Fifty years ago the BBC Northern Orchestra was created to provide broadcast music for the north of England.
Two years ago, in recognition of its increased stature, it was renamed the BBC
Philharmonic Orchestra.
Tonight, as part of its half century celebrations, a recording of the world premiere performance of Peter Maxwell Davies 's Third Symphony.
Peter Maxwell Davies was bom and studied in Manchester and it is appropriate that this first performance takes place in the Free Trade Hall,
Manchester. He talks to
Michael Berkeley about the influences behind the creation of his new symphony.
The programme also includes a performance of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in which the soloist is Silvia Marcovici
