starring
Made in Britain, this bitter film was
Chaplin's answer to his political accusers.
Chaplin plays King Shahdov, who flees from a revolution in his own country to New York but soon finds himself a victim of commercial exploitation -and of the infamous Un-American
Activities Committee. In typical Chaplin fashion, this attack on American life is leavened with some brilliant comedy sequences.
Screenplay, music, production and direction by CHARLES CHAPLIN.

Sir Roland Penrose - surrealist painter, art critic, writer and farmer -was bom in 1900 and died this year. In 1936, with his friend
Herbert Read , he astonished the British public with the first International Surrealist Exhibition. His sharp, witty and comprehensive biography of Pablo Picasso is still selling after 25 years. His enthusiasm for new ideas, his encouragement of the young and his great capacity for friendship will long be remembered by those who knew him.
In this film, made just over a year ago at his Sussex home, he talked about his life and times with Gavin Henderson.
