Japan and the Legacy of the Samurai
Last in the series
Narrated by Julian Pettifer Pageboy to the Gods
A recent survey revealed that nearly 80 per cent of Japanese are devout
Buddhists, but almost the same number profess to be followers of Shinto. People hedge their bets by following both religions at the same time, and keep in their homes two altars - one for Shinto gods, the 'Kami', and the other for the family dead.
In seeking an understanding of Japan today and of the 'Japanese spirit', it seems one always comes back to Shinto.

It's interesting information week on Fast Forward! Did you know that 1,253 years ago today Isiah Thrubweller from Alli Barumtum (a made-up place somewhere near Egypt) was voted the world's worst architect after he built the world's first round pyramid? And that Reginald Thlabbing was the first person to train his nose to run in a marathon? Fast Forward is a programme for slightly clever people.
