A portrait of Italy today seen through the lives of ten different Italians. 5: The Venetian Dance Master
Ferruccio Berolo is a passionate enthusiast. About Venice, where he lives.
About Venetian food and wine. And about classical dance, which he once performed and now teaches. This is the most important week of Ferruccio's year. He is frantically preparing the 95 children of his ballet school for their end-of-year show. Tempers fray as rehearsals go wrong. Doting but demanding parents, grandmothers and aunts fill the grand 18th-century theatre, and Ferruccio's future success depends on how they receive the performance.
But in spite of the stresses of teaching, Ferruccio is a man who enjoys himself. Choosing seafood at the Rialto, cooking surprising dishes for his friends, or drinking sparkling wine in one of Venice's many bars, Ferruccio is in his element. Narrated by Michael Pennington Written by DAVID WILLEY

Francis Bacon
To mark his 75th birthday, Arena presents this exclusive film portrait of the great British painter,
Francis Bacon. Despite his world-wide fame, Bacon remains one of the most contentious painters working today, and he still paints the human figure with the same conviction and intensity that startled the art world at his first exhibition nearly 40 years ago. Tonight, amid the spectacular disorder of his Chelsea studio, Bacon talks on film with great candour, to his friend of many years, the distinguished writer and critic David Sylvester. Chained together by a warder, John Jackson - an intolerant white - and Noah Cullen - a sensitive black, find themselves on the run when the truck carrying them to prison is involved in an accident. This powerful and exciting drama follows the adventures of the two men who begin by hating each other and develop a mutual trust and affection in their desperate attempt to escape their pursuers. This is one of the most vivid allegories in cinema history, using its fierce images to cover a passionate plea for humanity and tolerance within the framework of an exciting action movie.
