The Story of the Symphony Andre Previn with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra leader BARRY GRIFFITHS
'For years Tchaikovsky has been frowned on by the musical establishment, often for the most illogical of reasons - because he is a truly popular composer,' says Previn, 'because his music is direct in its appeal, honest, tuneful and highly emotional. But what is the magic in his music? Why do we respond to it time and time again?' In tonight's programme, Andre Previn conducts Tchaikovsky's sixth Symphony. Barely a week after its first performance the composer was dead. Was it an accident or suicide? And what were the mysterious circumstances that provoked such a tragedy?

(10, Chiarae to Scuro) starring
Francesco is obsessed with billiards. He is ecstatic when he beats the local champion, Scuro, but Scuro demands a return match.
Before long Francesco finds himself in trouble -
'borrowing' money from his employers to meet his debts. And, as if that weren't enough, there's the pretty girl downstairs whose saxophone case is identical to Francesco's cue case. Billiards is tremendously popular in Italy. Marcello Lotti who plays Scuro is nine-time national champion.
