Six films unravelling some of the technical, scientific, economic and political threads in the story of one of the world's most important textiles. Written and presented by Anthony Burton

The demand for more and more cloth produced the power loom in Britain, and the idea was taken to America by Francis Lowell of Boston.
Water power was superseded by steam power and a great change in productivity followed. So did riots. There were good employers but few listened to them. Lancashire grew rich, but it was not to last.

The Ashes of Atlantis
'There occurred violent earthquakes and floods and in one terrible day and night the island of Atlantis disappeared beneath the sea.' Plato's legend of a lost idyllic land has haunted man's imagination for centuries. Excavations on a volcanic island - Santorini - 60 miles north of Crete in the Aegean have revealed a buried Minoan city. Like Pompeii it is preserved under a mantle of pumice and ash. About 3,500 years ago the volcano of Santorini erupted and part of the island disappeared beneath the sea. The Minoan civilisation on Crete was destroyed. Does the buried city on Santorini hold the clue to the legend of Atlantis?

A series of six programmes in which Don Cupitt , Dean of Emmanuel College,
Cambridge, explores the revolution in ideas that has brought humanity from the secure world-view of the Middle Ages to today's crisis of faith.
3: Going. by the Book
Don Cupitt examines the challenge to the traditional
Christian view of the Bible as the 'Word of God'.
In Tubingen in 1835 David Strauss claimed that the supernatural stories in the Gospels were religious myths. His book made him famous, and destroyed his career - at the age of 27. In the 20th century
Albert Schweitzer was inspired by an even more radical view of the Bible to give his life to the cause of Christian compassion as the last of the 'missionary heroes' of Africa.

September 1984 - 40th anniversary of the Battle of Arnhem, and the last official act of remembrance of one of the most bitter battles of World War II. But for the Welsh soldiers who fought there, it was an experience they cannot forget - an experience which has shaped their day-to-day existence ever since. It was a major defeat - but not in the eyes of the men who fought at Arnhem and returned once again to the battlefield, or to the Dutch people who still remember and welcome the 'Airborne'.
