Below Lundy
A short season of underwater documentaries begins with a look at the waters around the tiny island set in the Bristol Channel. Lundy, owned by the National Trust, has long been a naturalist's paradise. Recognition of its unique underwater attractions is much more recent, but now Lundy is likely to become the nation's first marine nature reserve. Laurie Emberson discovers how the island merits such distinction.

The second of two films on American art presented by Vincent Scully
New World Visions
In this film VINCENT SCULLY continues the story of American art through the Civil War's bitter violence, the cruel seascapes of Winslow Homer, the sad realism of Thomas Eakins and the dazzling social portraits which Sargent painted of the new rich society only America could have produced. Alongside run themes of the position of women and of the Black in 19th-century America and there is continuing reference to architecture, culminating in images of Washington's classical ideal under the stress of modern history; setting of and witness to the Kennedy funerals and Vietnam demonstrations. 'Truly Washington's monuments hold the conscience of America, its memory, the image of its aspiration and its hope.'
