Alongside run themes of the position of women and of the Black in 19th-century America and there is continuing reference to architecture, culminating in images of Washington's classical ideal under the stress of modern history; setting of and witness to the Kennedy funerals and Vietnam demonstrations. Wales, represented by Leighton Rees, takes on Scotland in the form of Harry Patterson in an intriguing clash, while No 6 Seed Bobby George, playing John Cosnett, should make the second round.
Another potential champion, Richie Gardner, takes on Kelvin Clarke, and the top match of the evening is between No 3 Seed Dave Whitcombe, one of the most consistent players on the circuit and the talented Rab Scott.
