Making its début at Cannes in 1981, this epic film about Finland's most mysterious novelist, who led a double life as a revolutionary, was subsequently selected for film festivals all over the world.
From a childhood of rural poverty in Finland, Maiju Lassila moved to St Petersburg in 1900 and, in an astonishingly short time, became a rich and successful businessman. He also became a terrorist until his flight from the Tsar's secret police led him to a new life deep in the forests of Finland. There Lassila embarked on a tempestuous love affair, but politics remained his true passion.
