His work had an astonishing range: from New England's puritan past, to the most intimate details of his own personal life, and the larger historical perspectives of modern America-Vietnam, the Presidency, wars and assassinations. This study of his life includes unique archive footage of Robert Lowell talking about his work and reading it. Many of his friends also pay tribute to the man Eugene McCarthy has called ' the poet of history in America.'

If one were to list Stanley Matthews, Puskas, Eusebio, Tom Finney and Pele - it would not be impertinent to add Bobby Charlton. All were unquestionably great footballers. Bobby's background was football, he came from the Milburn family, who had fed league football with many a full-back, as well as 'Geordie' Jackie. His brother Jack signed for Leeds while Bobby himself became a 'Busby Babe' at Manchester United. Then tragedy as eight of his fellow 'babes' were killed in the Munich air disaster - 25 years ago today. For Charlton, Busby, and others who survived, life would never be the same. But those survivors had a bond - a will to avenge the fates - and to see Manchester United rise again. For Charlton the challenge at United culminated in the European Cup Competition in 1968, while his England goal was '1966 and all that'.
