In 1966 two shipbuilding firms at Portsmouth and Southampton joined Forces to become Vosper Thorny croft Ltd. Before the war they pioneered MTBS, and developed Bluebird and Miss England to win world records. Today they build fast warships for foreign navies and sophisticated destroyers and minehunters for the Royal Navy. Craftsmen in the yard have adopted automation - yet take pride in traditional skills.
But they fear the loss ot oraers tor the Royal Navy - and the current debate on the future of sea power is anxiously followed on the waterfront at Southampton and Portsmouth. Reporter
