Six Films of Early Exploration
Introduced from the Royal Geographical Society by Duncan Carse 5: Trans-China Expedition (1931)
' If the heat does not kill you, the cold will.' Such was the warning given to the great Citroen Trans-China Expedition.
Two columns of vehicles set out, one from the Mediterranean, one from Peking. Between lay the burning deserts of Syria, Iran and Afghanistan, the perilous mountain tracks of the Himalayas, the deep snows of the mountain passes, and the Gobi Desert in winter - a journey of some 8,000 miles.
The explorers' ordeal is captured in outstanding action photography: vehicles teetering on mountain ledges, hopelessly bogged down in deep snowdrifts, almost swept away in fierce torrents.
Yet, after almost a year, the Citroen expedition drove in triumph through Peking. Another great epic in exploration had been completed.
