Presented by Angela Rippon The 13th of 16 programmes The Way of the Village
Life in the country appeals to many - but is it just a romantic notion? Modern farming has already changed the face of the countryside, leaving villages that no longer need the farmworkers and craftsmen who were once the backbone of the community. How can their local shops, school and services survive?
Angela Rippon and Bernard Price visit the Cotswold village of Blockley, where the temptation to cash in on tourism has been resisted. But if we are to avoid preserving the countryside as a living museum, we have to find the means to revitalise our villages. In a converted silk mill, Angela discusses some of the solutions with the people of Blockley.

When Juan Carlos succeeded General Franco five years ago, many wondered how long he would last. It seemed an impossible task - to heal the scars of the Civil War, keep the peace between Left and Right, bring about political change and restore the Spanish monarchy. Today JUAN CARLOS is the king who has surprised them all. He has brought Spain from dictatorship to democracy. He is 43 - shrewd, humorous, a sportsman - living with his wife, Queen Sophia, and their three children in simple style just outside Madrid. He is a squash player and skier, Head of State and Commander-in-Chief. In this film profile, he is shown receiving ambassadors in the magnificent Oriente Palace, roughing it on army manoeuvres with his generals and at home with his family.
In a series of interviews with Jack Pizzey , he speaks for the first time of his feelings for General Franco and of the changes he has initiated in Spain.
It is a frank portrait of the King his people call ' the keystone that holds Spain together',
