Today the name of Millais conjures up such well-known popular favourites as the drowning of Ophelia, The Boyhood of Raleigh, or the sentimental Bubbles. But in his time Millais was one of the most gifted and versatile of all
English artists and much sought after as a portrait painter.
This programme, celebrating the 150th anniversary year of his birth, retraces the story of Millais's life and work through letters to and from his contemporaries and through a large collection of drawings and paintings, many of them seen publicly for the first time. Also taking part are art historian Malcolm Warner and writer Professor Quentin Bell , one of the best-known authorities on Victorian art and artists.
