This week:
Troubles in the Family
Troubles there certainly are at the start of this programme, but hv the time it ends the Chivers Family is much happier. So what happens in the 70 minutes in between? The short answer is something called Family Therapy. It coaxes families along a path of slow discoveries, sometimes painful truths, tears, insights, smiles and growing awareness.
For this special edition of Man Alive, one family-THE CHIVERS-spent five transforming sessions in front of cameras. Starting with their anxiety about their eldest boy's stealing, they worked towards greater understanding with therapist Dr Chris Dare. They had nothing to lose from openness - their neighbours and the boy's schoolmates already knew about their problems.
The record of the hurt and, later, the happiness of this one brave family shows what family therapy can do. But that's not all - if the experiences of the team making the programme are anything to go by, it also helps us to understand ourselves - even if we think that, for us, there are no troubles in the family.
