What About The Workers?
The overall rate of unemployment in Britain is more than six per cent; higher than at any time since the Second World War. Yet, the Director-General of the National Economic Development Council recently reported that: ' In vehicles, machine tools, electrical goods and other mechanical engineering industries around 40 per cent of firms reported that future output levels will be contained because of skilled labour shortage.' At a time when both government and industry are looking forward to a period of economic growth, it seems that fewer people are being trained as skilled workers than at any time in the last ten years.
In The Money Programme, John Roberts reports on the reasons for the shortage of skilled labour and what companies can do to ease it.
