Graham Chapman remembers Monty Python
Monty Python's flying Circus was seen as television's ultimate mad comedy show. It started in 1969 - written by and starring John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Eric Idle, Michael Palin and Terry Jones with animation by Terry Gilliam - and won the Silver Rose at the Montreux Festival in 1971. Graham Chapman remembers: 'The genesis of Python was, I suppose, the meeting between John Cleese and myself when we joined 'The Footlights' at Cambridge about 15 years ago. We went on to write for The Frost Report and Barry Took, who was trying to get a late-night satire show started, introduced us to the rest of the team, the BBC's working title for our show was 'The Circus' though we put forward suggestions like 'Sex and Violence', 'Owl Stretching Time', and 'A Horse, a Bucket, and a Spoon'.
'In the end they agreed to add 'Flying' and 'Monty Python', a name we thought sounded like nasty Charing Cross Road agent. I think the Beeb believed they were going to get another TW3, but we just went ahead and did what we wanted to do and it developed as it went along.
In the end we left TV to concentrate on other things but I think we'll probably come back. Television, I believe, is what we're best at.'

A series of ten programmes 6: Spearhead of Technology
Introduced by Christopher Roads
The development of firearms in the 19th century, like the space-race in the modern world, was closely related to general progress in technology. Standardisation of parts, mass-production and the use of new materials like steel were all pioneered in arms manufacture-and it was a time when the individual inventor could still contribute at the highest level to the progress of his chosen field.
