A Way of Life in a Scottish Castle

This documentary portrait of an unusual Scottish family shows a corner of society that is unlike any other in the British Isles. In highly cultivated and generally prosperous Perthshire, Humphrey and Cherry Drummond, with their six children and several dozen animals, struggle to keep the family castle and estate going, while still taking an active part in the traditional social life.

This full-length film portrait of America from the Wall Street Crash to Pearl Harbour uses only contemporary material - newsreel, documentary and Hollywood films. Stars of the film include Franklin Roosevelt, James Cagney, Huey Long, Joe Louis, John Dillinger, Shirley Temple and King Kong. Original recordings of the voices of Rudy Vallee, Bessie Smith and Woody Guthrie help create the mood of the times - the era of the New Deal, of breadlines and Busby Berkeley, of marathon dances and the Dust Bowl.
