A prelude to
The Flying Dutchman
Tomorrow night at 8.15 comes the highpoint of BBC2's musical autumn. Tonight the pianist and Wagner enthusiast, David Wilde , tells the story of the opera and with Nell McCaul as the young Richard Wagner relates how it came to.be written.
Wagner sold the French rights of his story, and by 1843 there were two ' Flying Dutchmen' on the operatic stage. The French composer's version has been totally forgotten; for Wagner it was the turning point in his career.
In this workshop programme excerpts from both versions are sung by Lynda Richardson (soprano) Vernon Midgley (tenor)
John Tomlinson (bass-baritone)
DAVID WILDE also plays the two Liszt transcriptions from The Flying Dutchman and there is a preview of tomorrow's production.
