"M. Daguerre shows the plain plate of copper; he places it, in your presence, in his apparatus, and, in three minutes, he takes out the metal and shows it to you, covered with a charming design." (Literary Gazette, 1839)

To the public the first Daguerreotypes seemed like witchcraft. Nicephore Niepce made his first experiments as early as 1816, but he died before his partner, Daguerre, achieved success.

Freddie Laker's answer to that time-honoured question was 'I do' and he became one at the age of 35. He did so in a business known as much for its failures as its successes - independent aviation - and is an almost classic case of the tea boy who became the tycoon.
Tonight's film presents a close-up of this volatile, energetic and controversial figure who is always prepared to carry the flag of British private aviation against any foe, anywhere.
