Introduced by Robert Robinson.
John Braine's first success in 1957 was with "Room at the Top". Since then he has written six more successful novels, moved to Woking, Surrey, from his native Yorkshire, and for several years has been a controversial figure as a political maverick. Last year John Braine produced "Writing a Novel" - a manual of basic advice for beginners. Just published in paperback, "The Queen of a Distant Country" has as its hero a successful north-country writer who has come south to live. Robert Robinson went to find out how much of that hero was John Braine.
Joan Bakewell and Brian Walden, MP, each choose one of the new books.
