This extraordinary beautiful tender lovely woman, caught up in this unbelievably abysmal life, hardly able to hold her mind together with this absolute intensity of purpose that she's going to succeed. She's going to become a great movie star.
In the studios of KCET, Los Angeles, MELVYN BRAGG meets Norman Mailer to talk about his biography of Marilyn Monroe.
The biography complements a collection of photographs of the star who was in her time the most sought-after photographic subject in the world. She died on 5 August 1962, aged 36. Despite her extraordinary world-wide appeal, her personality remains enigmatic. Also included in the programme, MARILYN MONROE on film in scenes from The Prince and the Show-girl, Some Like It Hot and The Misfits.
