Like the violin playing of Paganini, who influenced him profoundly. Franz Liszt stretched the powers of the piano to previously unheard-of limits. Like Paganini he too travelled constantly, applauded as the supreme virtuoso of his instrument.
Liszt was welcomed to this country at three widely separated periods of his life. But by chance these represent three distinct stages in his musical development: London saw Liszt as the infant prodigy who played for George IV, as the glamorous sex-symbol who was possibly the most gifted virtuoso pianist who had ever lived, and as the legendary and much venerated composer of old age.
David Wilde , winner of the International Liszt-Bartok Competition in Budapest and a passionate advocate of Liszt, tonight plays music from each period and talks about the prophetic composer and his connections with London.
