Trevor Philpott reports on Four Corners of The Marketplace 3: The Mountain People
The High Pyrenees are typical of that great mass of rural France which is pilloried so often as the unbearable burden on the back of the Common Market.
There's no doubt that each one of these people costs the townsman money. There's no way in which he can show a profit on his day's labour, however long it lasts. But one-fifth of the land area of France is mountain country and it's the herds of the mountain farmers that keep the mountains green.
Ten years from now they'll all be gone, their lovely villages will be quite empty. And what will happen to the green mountains then?
