The reputation of Gunter Grass as poet, playwright and novelist reaches far beyond his native Germany. The Tin Drum, his first novel, sold 11 million copies and was translated into 16 languages. But recently he has sacrificed several months each year to drum-up support for Willy Brandt, and has become as well known in his political activities as for his writing.
In this film made during his strenuous election campaigning at the end of last year, Grass talks about his life and his preoccupations, from childhood in Danzig under the Nazis, to international fame today, and explains why he cares so much about the future of democracy in Germany.
Commentary by Alan Dobie
Starring Liv Ullmann, Max Von Sydow, Gunnar Bjornstrand
