Lying 20 stormy miles west of Shetland, Foula is Britain's most remote inhabited island; indeed in earlier times, it may have been the Ultima Thule of the Roman sea-borne explorers.

In less than a century, the population has dwindled from 200 to only 30 - but the remaining islanders scorn any suggestion that they should abandon their crofts for an easier mainland life. In fact, they regard the rest of us with an amused and sceptical tolerance.

This is the story of three boys - Philip Ramocon, Dabs Edun and Leburn Rose. They are ambitious, talented, and black. The stories we normally hear about boys like this are concerned with their special problems - bad housing, unemployment, the violence of the ghetto. But many are conquering prejudice and defying prophecies of doom.
Esther Rantzen meets three boys who are, each in their own way, breaking out of the ghetto. Philip is a musician. Dabs is a boxer. Leburn is head boy of a comprehensive school in London and his ambition is to become a teacher; to succeed simply on the strength of his character and intelligence. All three are determined to make good lives of their own; all three believe they have at least a fighting chance.

Joan Crawford plays Vienna, owner of a gambling house and the sworn enemy of the equally formidable local ranchers' leader - Emma Small. In this unusual, atmospheric Western, probably the first to strike a blow for Women's Lib, the two larger-than-life female characters dominate the action. Even the two tough men in Vienna's life, Johnny Guitar and the Dancin' Kid leave the centre of the stage to the women.
